Maths is a very important part of Year 5 and will be taught for an hour each day. The focus for maths lessons will be fluency – learning and practicing new skills and reasoning and problem solving – applying the skills to solve real life situations and problems. We will start by looking at number and place value and move to addition and subtraction, and then develop our multiplication and division knowledge.
All children should know their tables to 12x12 and the related division facts off by heart by the end of year 4. It is important that they know the facts off by heart as this will help them with more complex mental calculations. Any child who does not know these facts must practise hard to ensure they catch up.
