Class 8: Miss Crane

Children in this class are aged between 8 and 9.

Teacher: Miss Crane

Welcome to Class 8!
For everybody in the class, this will be an important year for learning; children should start to become more competent and confident in all areas, using and applying their learning from year 3 particularly in reading, writing and maths.  We will be working hard learning new skills, practising these skills and applying them across all lessons and subjects.

Our first topic will be ‘Blue Abyss’, where the children will have the opportunity to learn all about the world's seas and oceans, the Great Barrier reef, living things and their habitats and how submarines work. They'll even get the chance to design and make their own working models! This will be both an exciting and interesting topic, with lots of opportunity for the children to take control of their learning and find answers to the questions that interest them. Over the year, we have 4 topics in total and I'm looking forward to not only teaching them, but also learning some new things from the children too!

Important Information

Homework: Homework will be sent out every Thursday and is expected to be returned each Tuesday (or earlier). Homework returned on time will earn children 5 You’ve Been Spotteds and 10 house points. Children that do not return homework on time will complete it during break times until it is complete. Homework will consist of times tables practise and spellings practise. Children will also be expected to read at home daily – can you please make sure reading records are dated and signed each time you read at home. All homework must be completed neatly, to the same standard as work in school.

PE: PE will take place on Monday mornings and Friday afternoons. Children will need to bring their PE kit to school on a Monday and take it home on a Friday. All jewellery, including earrings, must be removed (covering with a plaster is not allowed). All children are required to take part in PE and forgetting their kit twice or more will result in lunch time detentions.

Author of the half term: Our author for this half term is Adam Blade. We will be learning all about him, the books he has written and comparing him and his style of writing to other books we like. Adam has written many books including the Beast Quest and Sea Quest series. As a class, we will be reading his book 'Cephalox the Cyber Squid'. Please encourage your child to read his books, research facts on him and discuss what they like and dislike about his books. You will find lots of information here: http://www.seaquestbooks.co.uk/

Reading books: Reading books must be in school every day and your child is expected to change their reading book regularly. Children are expected to read at home daily – can you please make sure reading records are dated and signed each time you read at home. Please check your childs progress and encourage them to read and change their books frequently.
