Year 6 is an important year for learning; it is the year when children should become competent and confident in all areas, but particularly in reading, writing and maths. We will be working hard learning new skills, practicing these skills and applying them across all lessons and subjects.
We have finished our first topic, which was ‘Hola Mexico’, where the children had the opportunity to learn all about Mexico, Mexican fesitvals, the Mayan Civilization and Mexican cuisine. We are now onto our second topic 'Frozen Kingdoms'. During this topic, the children will be learning about the Arctic and Antarctica and the animals that live there; explorers from the past; the amazing Titanic and the spectacular Northern Lights. Keep looking in the topic section of the class page and in our gallery for updates on our progress throughout this exciting topic.
Homework: Homework goes home on a Friday and needs to be back in school by the following Wednesday. Homework not completed on time will be completed during break times.
PE: PE will be on a Tuesday this half term. Please ensure that your child has their FULL PE kit in school. As the weather gets colder, we will continue to work outside so track suit bottoms and a jumper are advisable. Please also ensure chidlren have indoor and out door footwear. Also please remember no earrings.
Author of the half term: Our author of the half term is C. S Lewis. We will be reading his award-winning book - The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, as this links to our topic 'Frozen Kingdoms.
Reading books: All children need to bring their reading book to school every day. Please listen to your child read and encourage them to summarise their reading and to make predictions. It is also really important to discuss the meanings of words in order to develop childrens vocabulary. Children in year 6 are encouraged to write in their own reading records to show their understanding of the book they are reading through writing a summary or a prediciton. These reading records will be checked regularly and children will be asked to fill in these records during break time if they are not being completed at home. it expected that there are 3 comments each week from children.
